The Beer Goggle Effect - The Engineering Way

In a recent study conducted by researchers at England's Manchester University in 2005, scientists actually came up with a mathematical formula to calculate the extent of the "beer goggle" effect on a given individual in a given situation. Their reasoning for creating this formula is that alcohol is not really the only factor affecting the drunken perception of beauty. Other factors, according to their research, include:

* How brightly lit the area is
* The observer's eye-sight quality
* The amount of smoke in the air
* The distance of the observer from the observed

The formula goes like this:

where:
o An is the number of servings of alcohol
o S is the smokiness of the area on a scale of 0 - 10
o L is the lighting level of the area, measured in candelas per square meter, in which 150 is normal room lightning
o Vo is Snellen visual acuity, in which 6/6 is normal and 6/12 is the lower limit at which someone is able to drive
o d is the distance between the observer and the observed, measured in meters

The formula works out a "beer goggle" score ranging from 1 to 100+. When β = 1, the observer is perceiving the same degree of beauty he or she would perceive in a sober state. At 100+, everybody in the room is a perfect 10.

Alrighty - so I found this on a friends profile - and as it is a Thursday night, and it seems only appropriate to find something productive to do, What if your life was a movie?? Here's how it works:
1. open your library (itunes, winamp, media player, ipod, etc)

At last, the first episode of systm is finially avaliable for download. For those who dont know what systm is, its a web-based, tech TV show, much like what the screen savers used to be. That, and mix in a little bit of underground hacking, two geeks with way too much time, and a huge fan base, and you end up with systm. Give it a try if you are looking for something interesting to watch (and its free, so why not) I have made a couple of the download links avaliable below (they are torrent links, so you need bit-torrent to download them). Thanks to the whole systm crew (Kevin Rose, Dan Huard & Keith Harrison) for making geek content avaliable again to the masses.

Ah, the light at the end of the tunnel. I am very sorry to all those who have been visiting the site over the past couple of months, it has been at the back of my mind, and has not had any attention (so much so that I used the domain name for another project for a while). I dont have a huge amount of time to update tonight, but stuff will start coming monday and tuesday this week. In the meantime, here is a funny joke I ran accross. Sort of good timing too considering grad is this week: A really drunk guy at a party walks up to the host and asks, Do you have some green toilet paper that says, Fuck you? Kevin Rose has taken it upon himself to completly dismantel a Mac Mini and rebuilt a nano-itx pc inside. Two things are running through my mind: 1. What is he thinking, 2. Sweet, a media center pc (running MythTV nonetheless). You can check out his entire project here. My cudos by the way, for such an inovative idea (although someone else has probably done it before, Kevin seems to have enough publicity to make it work).

So I know I havent posted for a very long time, and I mean very. I have been really bogged down with robotics and with exams and all of that stuff. Im back now though, ready and waiting with all of my tech news and such. That wil start tomorrow, but for now, I found this while I was digging around my My Documents folder. MM, talk nerdy to me baby!

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,

and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort,

and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,

then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,

and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash,

and your data is corrupted cause the index doesn't hash,

then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house,

says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,

but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol,

that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall.

And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,

so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse;

then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,

'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang.

When the copy on your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk,

and the macro code instructions is causing unnecessary risk,

then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM,

and then quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom!

So Mr. Jobs was finially back again today at the anual Mac World Expo in Sanfran, black turtleneck and all. Regardless of his fashion sense, it was a very exciting day in technology. Lots of new releases, everything from software to hardware to somethings in between. So I will get started by saying Alex, dear friend, im sorry to say; YOU WERE WRONG! NO media player from Apple. But there was a lot of big news out of apple today. To start, new iLife, brand new iWorks (the evolution of the old Appleworks), a sweet looking preview of Tiger (which was confirmed to be out in Q2, way before longhorn I might add). By the way, the highlighted links will take you straight there. But now onto the important parts -> THE HARDWARE!

Although this wasent the first announcement, I want to save the best for last. So above is the brand spanking new Ipod Shuffle. Yep, no screen. But its a totally new concept for Apple. Flash based, no screen tiny (although the mini is going that direction) and CHEAP! Thats right, its only $130 (canadian of course) for a 512mb player. Im not such a fan of the whole no screen concept, but it is very inivative, and I think it will sell very well (aka already sold out) By the way, it release today, so go buy one, I think I will.





So yes, this is my absolute favorite, and it is truly amazing.  Introducing the mac mini.  So ya, the name could use some work, but hey, its 6" square, and 2" tall, so who cares.  Plus, its $600, so just wow.  Its got everything by the way, G4 @ 1.25 (or 1.5 for a little cost upgrade), 256mb ram, and a decent ATI video card.  I will mention that there is no keyboard, mouse, monitor or speakers, but thats not what im looking for anyway.  So check it out.  Im thinking that when it comes out on the 22nd of January it will be sold out in 3 or 4 hours.  But GO BUY ONE ANYWAY!

So what if I have been playing too much Halo 2 insted of doing my homework. Schools not that important anyway! Yah, finially got some new headphones. After numerous hours of reserach and squandering most of my christmas money, I have finially found my true love. Well at least somewhat. I must say that after almost 50 hours of burn-in time, they do sound amazing. I can finially tell the difference between a 128kbps and 340kbps song, and let me tell you, the later is much better. Best of all, they are so closed, so I can no longer hear either my jet-engine of a computer, or my mother. Both of which are good things I might add. Other than that, christmas was good. My parents found a way to get me nothing at all that was on my list, but thats ok, because I got some really sweet stuff anyway. E-mail me and I will tell you about it all! In hindsight, I think not getting speakers was a good thing, because headphones allow me to blast out my eardrums without bothering anyone else (or told to turn it down). So ya, thats about it.

Were all that were left from my moment of grief.
I racked up my shotgun and climbed in the car.
When an antlion hollered at me from afar.

He was armoured and sharp, a right nasty thing.
I pulled out the crowbar, it clinked with a ding.
A wink of my eye, and a swing to the head.
I bludgeoned the beast and left him for dead.

I spoke not a word and went straight back to work,
Got to the base and blew up the jerk,
I gave Breen the finger and, as I mused.
The G-Man appeared and made me confused.

I sprang out of my bed, it had all been a dream,
The computer was on, and had loaded up Steam.
I think I've been playing too much Half Life 2
I wonder if Gordon gets Xmas off too?

Merry Christmaka, lol. James from a couple of years ago. Hoping to go pick up some new vinyl tomorrow with Alex. He has joined the ranks of the great and gone back to the retro stylings of records (my kudos if you are curious). Set last night went really well, i got picked up for another 6 months. That was my last live one of the year, I have a pre-recorded one that is going to air sometime next week (not sure when yet), and then I start right away again in the new year. January 5th I believe is the date, 9:35 mountain, 8:35 pacific for anyone tuning in. Gonna keep it shorter for today, ie. Thats all folks. I got a bunch of christmas stuff that I have been shooting around town that I will start posting probably tomorrow.

Sometimes life can be so beautiful can't it. Neways, sorry to anyone who has been waiting for that set from last sunday, the file got corrupted 2 minutes into the recording and so I just scrapped it. New things in my life; not a huge amount. I am looking forward to christmas finially. It took longer than usual, but putting christmas lights into the basement seemed to do the trick. Hoping for that lovely new set of speakers this year, but im not so sure I will get them. Oh well, thats what boxing day is for right? I plan to hit up futureshop at about 6 or 6:15 so I should get lots of good deals. Powerbook sometime in the new year too, so that will be exciting. I have a 35minute set on wendsday as per usual, so I will post the links on tuesday for the live stream, and then probably on thursday for the recorded set.

So the reason I havent been posting in a while is cuz I really have nothing to talk about. But for the sake of keeping this up and running, I will give a tiny little update into the life of me. UBC application is all in and done. Now begins the 6 months of suspense to find out weather I got in or not. Goodie! I got started on my xbox lan party mod this week. Hoping to turn one of my old pepsi record crates into a portible base station for HALO 2 lan parties and whatever else I fancie. Check out my project log on bit-tech for all the info. Nothing really else new, except we finially finished sanding my basement wall (whew). OO, thats my other excuse for not posting, no access to the computer because its covered in 6" of dust, j/k. Hopefully the new big screen TV is not too far behind. :)

Commcast = Morrons

So I returned from Fredericton yesterday, and what did I find, A COMPLETE overhall of TSS, cancelling of unscrewed, and most of my favourite personalities FIRED. How bout that for sucky. Commcast, or more specifically G4TechTV decided that they did not like the way the network was going, so they proceded to fire the majority of the former TechTV staff, as well as some of the new staff (alex, Im sorry man, that just sucks!). The official stance is that TSS will continue after a restructuring period, but that is total bull considering what some of the staff told me. As a result, today, I canceled TechTV on my satelite. The only unfortunite thing is that I now miss Leo's Canada Call for help, but hopefully I can pick up a TIVO stream of that from somewhere. Everyone knew going it that it was never going to be the same as the glory days, but I never thought it would end like this. Norton, you got out at a good time man.

So In Short:
Kevin & Sarah - Still there, but not for long it looks like

X-play - Still around, no shock there, but I dont get the channel any more so whatever.

I urge anyone who cares to write to commcast and inform them of how unhappy you are with what they have done. It wont change anything now, but at least we can make a point.

As for news, new ATI AMD64 chipsets for the desktop. 6800 mobile video chipset. Beth and I are officially over (in all her wisdom, she informed me while I was trying to finish my hum project, which really helped!), so ladies, back on the market again. News for today: George W. Bush won the US Election after john kerry concedied in Ohio. Silly Kerry, if history tells us anything; all you have to do is whine a whole bunch, have a bunch of lawyers, and demand recounts to win an election. No majority nessecary. Other news, NEW OC TONITE! And it was every so sweet. Now i'm no spoiler but after last seasons finale (punks, why leave it on such a low note) this was a needed boost. New set on thursday next week I think. I will be recording this one so that it can be downloaded, I have had a couple of requests, so let your prayers be answered. American Politics - Get out there and vote

Today, millions of americans will go to the polls in the hopes of making a difference. While I have my own opinions about the way I would like to see the election turn out, I have no real influence on the results. Based on this, I want to encourage any americans to get out and make a difference by voting. Voter apathy is at an all time record high. Young people (im one too, so I can call us that) simply dont take the time to vote, even though we are all very intrested in politics and the function of the world. Although "freedom" is still just an illusion, it still gives us opportunities that millions of others in the world will never get a chance to experience. So if you havent voted yet, get out there and do it. It may take an hour or two, but you are making a significant decision in your life.

Hey everyone,

Good news today, suse 9.2 was released by novell. Anyone who knows me well knows that suse is one of my favorite distros of linux, and 9.2 (I have already been playing with it) is seeking to better something that is already great. For anyone who is interested, you can find more stuff Here. Also, new version of firefox was out on tuesday. They fixed something like 260 bugs from the PR of 1.0, keep up the great work guys. More info here. Finally, due to the success of the radio show a couple of nights ago, I now have a bi-weekly 1.5 hour set on di.fm. More info will be coming soon.

Great news for the robotics team this week, enmax in all their graciousness decided that Knights Robotics was a worthy cause and donated $9000 to the cause. This gets us up and running at full spead as we have enough to cover the kit/regional entry fee as well as about $1700 additional to get the chassis built. GO ENMAX.

Exciting news! No, spaceshipone has not broken another record, but I finially got the extra storage for my computer. 2 new SATA 'cuddas @ 200 each. I figure that this should keep me in video editing for the next 6 months or so. Plus, a brand spanking new Enermax 500 to keep it all running. Minor side-effect; my system is currently down while I try to get it all running in raid-0. I got it to boot once but then it decided to get cranky and will not boot (I am writing this from the lowly confines of the carrer center computers). In addition, since my 'main' system is down, this also means I am without internet as 'big computer' acts as my network router from my house server. O low is I who decided that I needed more space. Tata Hum project.

Maui X-Stream has announced Cherry OS, a Mac OS X emulator for Windows. The $49 program claims to run Panther on a PC. I find this very hard to believe, but I’m not willing to waste $50 to find out. If it is true, the authors will be shut down before you read this. In order to emulate a Mac you’d have to copy a considerable amount of proprietary Apple software and firmware. It seems highly unlikely that a lone programmer in Hawai’i could reverse engineer such a significant amount of code.

Something cool that you may want to check out. GMAIL vutural storage drive, now for windows. http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm is the website. It seems like a sweet way to add a nice piece of attached storage (1gig) without the cost of a thumb drive or .mac (which is only 100mb). Nice haridoo too.

Exciting news today everyone. Incase I have not had a chance to tell you yet (which seems unlikely considering the number of people that I have informed) Spaceship One captured the Ansari X prize today at about 9:45 mountain time. Unlike last weeks flight, pilot brian binnie managed to keep the spacecraft on a smooth and uneventful trip up to and slightly above 100 km's in elevation. In other news, robotics message boards a up and running, so if you have not signed up yet, please do.

I know that I have not posted for a couple of days. Really to speak of, nothing has really changed. School has started. It simply feels like I had a nice long break (not unlike in may) and now I am back. Guidence was of course, insane and still is (I went by at about 11:20 today and there were about 30 people waiting around in the office, suckers!). Today = D-day. For all of you that are reading this (a select few) you will all know that today was the return to missery and torture. All things considering, school is not all that bad I guess. 2 cores and a gym class can not be totally considered the rack but it is still a return to somewhere that I am sure most of us would rather not be. D-day -1. School for me as with most of the rest of canada begins tomorrow. Like thousands of others around the country, I am saying goodbye to late summer night and free time in search of education. I still dont have school supplies or a backpack but hopefully that can soon be remedied. I plan to keep positing photos that I took on the SALTS trip (only the good ones) because this is the only place so far that I can host them, so keep watching. Tata for now.
